Guide for Urban Bicycling

Commuter's Checklist

Whether you’re negotiating the morning rush hour or riding through a sunlit street in the evening, urban bike commuting is a craft. It blends planning, awareness, and a touch of resilience. Here’s a comprehensive checklist to help you think through every stage of the journey (before, during, and after) so you can ride safer, smarter, and happier!

1

Before you ride
Planning and Preparation

Check the forecast: Temperature, precipitation, wind... Plan for layers you can add or remove.
Visibility: Shorter days mean darker rides. Pack lights and reflective gear accordingly.
Lights and visibility: Front white light, rear red light, and reflective elements. Test lights before leaving.
Fenders and racks: If you carry a bag or rain gear, ensure fenders remain clear of the tires.
Lock plan: Choose a lock with enough length to lock your bike to a immovable object with the frame.
Quick-release awareness: Quick-release wheels? Lock the skewers or bring another lock for the wheels.

2

During the ride
Safety and mindful riding

Ride predictably: Maintain a steady line, use hand signals, and communicate with pedestrians and drivers through clear gestures.
Street position: Stay aware of the door zone and sudden door openings; give way to pedestrians and transit passengers as needed.
Hydration and snacks: Keep a small bottle of water and a quick snack for longer commutes.
Rain response: If rain starts, slow down, increase following distance, and use lights. Keep a change of dry clothes at work if possible.
Dirt and grime: After a wet ride, wipe down the drivetrain and brakes to prevent sludge build-up.

3

After You arrive
Return, recovery, storage

Positioning: Park in a secure, visible area. If you must ride into a basement or garage, secure the bike and approach with lights.
Hydration and nutrition: Rehydrate with water or electrolyte drinks; a balanced snack or meal post-ride helps recovery.
Cleaning: Rinse or wipe off road salt and grime from the frame, chain, and brakes. Dry to prevent rust.
Lubrication: Lightly lube the chain if it’s dry or squeaky; avoid over-lubing as it can attract dirt.
Maintenance check: Quick inspection of tires, brakes, and chain before your next ride can prevent morning delays.

Safe riding

The city is a moving landscape of people, weather, traffic and your bicycle is a tool to navigate it with freedom and efficiency. By embracing a practical, well-thought-out checklist before, during, and after your ride, you can transform daily commuting from a potential stressful experience into a reliable and rewarding part of your routine. Safe riding!
