Whether you’re on a gravel bike or an e-bike, the mix of active travel in the great outdoors and minimalist packing lets you enjoy maximum freedom—even off the beaten track. How you shape your bikepacking adventure, classic with a tent and sleeping mat or a bit more luxury with hotel stays along the way, the key to a great trip lies in good preparation and choosing the right gear.

Your bike: your constant companion

Above all, bikepacking should be fun. To make sure you’re not thinking about turning back after just a few miles, double-check that your bike’s geometry and setup offer you the most comfortable ride possible. What feels right is very personal, so don’t hesitate to get advice from a specialist bike shop. Plan a route that suits both you and your bike. Especially on your first tour, set realistic daily distances you can enjoy without getting frustrated. Consider the terrain, elevation, and rest stops. Where you can attach bags depends on your bike. Use lightweight, waterproof frame, fork, top tube or rack bags, a handlebar roll, or a sleek saddlebag. These usually mount via the manufacturer’s attachment points or Velcro straps. Important: keep the center of gravity low and close to the bike to maintain stability and handling.

Lock your bike

The right lock depends on how you plan your route. Are you staying in hotels with bike storage, or camping out in the open? Generally, we recommend folding locks for bikepacking tours. They’re flexible, secure, and lighter than heavy chain locks. If you’re on an e-bike and weight isn’t a big deal, go for a higher security level with a longer locking bar for maximum convenience.
